View of Qingdao, the capital of Shandong province in the People's Republic of China. This big city is located in the north-east of China, on the Yellow Sea. During the 2008 Olympic Games, the sailing competition was held there.
Close to the May 4th Square
Busy Qingdao street. No culture shock here. It's just like any other big city.

Looking over the city from a huge poster, Deng Xiaoping, the late Chinese Communist Party leader, and a reformer who led China towards a market economy, seems pleased with Qingdao.
May 4th Square, on the beach at Fushan Bay.

Olympic building across from May 4th square.

Sunday walkers.

People looking for sea creatures, I guess for food.

Qingdao is famous for its seafood. Sea cucumbers being sold at high prices.

More fresh seafood (still moving) being sold streetside. Top left are small or young octopus.

Residential buildings close to Zhanshan Temple.

One of two lions guarding the entrance to the Zhanshan Temple. The photos below are from the temple complex, the biggest in Qingdao and built in 1945.

Goddess in lotus statue.

Incense burner in front of prayer hall. Monks in orange robes and many pilgrims were there. The atmosphere was quite serene and somewhat mysterious.

Temple cat 1.

Temple cat 2.

Temple cat 3. I was pleased to see so many cats at the temple. The monks who are (generally) vegetarian, seem to tolerate the cats as these were not afraid of me. This scruffy cute one followed me for a few meters after I petted him.

Detail of a hall balcony.

The temple pagoda to the right.

Closer look at the pagoda.

Happy dogs with a couple of old men close to the temple. Feels good to see some happy furry friends in China...

A magpie. In China, the bird is seen as a symbol of good luck. I saw quite a few in Qingdao, where the tall buildings, expensive cars and busy people seem to prove the symbolism of the magpie...
