Sumatra: Medan, Sibolangit and Berastagi

Probably my last set of photos from my 2009 2 months stay in Indonesia. I was able to take a day off and go to Sumatra last friday. My aim was to visit the Sumatran jungle. Bukit Lawang was a long drive from the airport, so I opted for a closer jungle experience.

I will be leaving Jakarta tomorrow. I'll never tire of visiting this amazing country. The simplicity and smiles of the people and the beaty of the nature here will always beckon me. Hopefully, the loggers and greedy people will leave the remaining stretches of jungles and natural havens in peace.
Polonia airport, Medan. The characteristic roof and bull's head of northern Sumatran architecture of the Batak people.
Street scenes on the outskirts of the airport.

My first sighting of a pig in two months. The Batak people are predominantly Christian. I guess North Sumatra is a good example of peaceful coexistence between two religions, Indonesia being a Muslim state. Along the way, I even saw fruit foxes (big bats) being sold, in cages. Poor animals waiting to be slaughtered. The thought that they wouldn't be able to fly at sundown was heart-wrenching.

Batak church with the same characteristic architecture.
On my way to the jungle.
Toilet! Pee on the wall and wash it with some water.
Getting closer.
Sibolangit Botanical Parc jungle. Amazing place. I could hear the monkeys in the canopy, as well as various birds and insects.

Vine climbing the tree.
At one point, I felt something biting me. Although I was wearing pants covering my hiking boots, a yellow leech had snuck in and was sucking blood through my sock!
Spider feeding on a grasshopper.

Cricket with yellow veins.
Grasshopper. So many different insects I saw...
Restaurant roof on the way to Berastagi, in the mountains.
Hotels on the way. Berastagi is a popular spot with expats. At an altitude of around 1500 meters or more above sea level, the weather is very confortable.
Berastagi house.
Washing freshly picked carrots.
Bull, goats and pine trees, evidence of higher altitudes.
Berastagi monkeys!
Juvenile practicing adult moves :)
Entering Medan at dusk.
Medan square.
Dutch architecture Post Office of Medan. Built in 1919.
The black domed Mesjid Raya.
Istana Maimoen Palace.
