I made another venture to Old Jakarta , or Batavia, to take a better look at the 18th century Dutch architecture (on the 16th of feb 2008). Most of the buildings are in poor state but you do think that you're in Europe when you leave the details out. I saw many seemingly homeless people. The canal that passes through Batavia is dirty and foul-smelling.
Sunda Kelapa is the old harbour of Jakarta. It was built in the early 17th century and is used by fishermen and wooden sailing cargo vessels. The harbour is very dirty and smelly but it's a must-see. It was interesting seeing the big sailships and the workers loading and unloading various cargo.
I've posted some pics from Batavia, the harbour and its cats, my ride in a Bajaj (3 wheel noisy shaky time of a ride) and a couple of various photos... If you look carefully, you'll see me in the mirror of the bajaj. If not, it's time to get a new pair of glasses :)
Enjoy!
